ok i have a 306 with a stock cam and i have 1.72 pedestal mount RRs. the first problem was the valves were'nt closing all the way- purchased the ford racing RR shim kit- figured since i added .020"+ more lift i would put the .060" shims (comes in a pack of .030" thin, and .060" thick shims. as the " pre-load has to be with in .020" to .060" (so it says in the info that came with them)i figured it would be safe but i thought wrong. it is ticking really bad (loud) on the driver side. im going to take the valve cover off and see if it may have come loose but if it did'nt i just want to know my options... thanks!!!

Sounds like you either have too long a pushrod or too much lifter preload. Check the alignment of the rocker arm tip on the valve stem, if the tip is more on the exhaust side of the valvestem, your pushrods might be too long.
Other probability is you've got too much lifter preload. About half a turn of preload should be all you've got. I'd re-do the preload on all the valves.
