Hey all, I'm pretty new to the world of tech in regards to Mustangs. I own a 1966 Mustang, and a 1986 Mustang. The 86 is a 5.0 EFI HO, and it could certainly use some power. I also have a pretty built 306 that I want to put in the 86, but I'm not really sure how to go about doing it. I'm worried about the wiring, as obviously the EFI motor has quite a bit more. Does anyone know any articles/builds they could direct me to, that would outline this process of converting an EFI engine to a carbureted one without the wiring being completely messed up. Do you guys think this will be an easy transplant or a hard one? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello Edwin, I don't think we've ever attempted this swap. Obviously, you won't need the computer so all that wiring can be tied up in the corner of the engine compartment or removed altogether. I've seen a million carbureted late-model Mustangs out there so someone should have an outline of what's involved. Good luck with your search.

I would be interested in specifics of this swap. I have an '86 GT convertible bought without engine/trans. I just picked up a running wrecked '85 GT and have been searching for information about the swap. Specifically, throttle linkage and wiring, I see that the battery and solonoid are in different locations. Is the wiring in the dash different too? Are there any other things such as brackets and pulleys which look similar but are dimensionally different. Thanks, Mark D.

Theres not alot to the swap. My advice is the same I always use for myself, start from scratch, take out all of the harness going to the engine, you wont need them. As for myself, I would say scratch all of the harnesses and do the wiring yourself. I know most ppl dont look at it this way, but get rid of your factory guages and install aftermarket mechanical guages, you can do the wiring on these very easily, and as far as the engine you will only need a block ground, and power, thats simple. Heres the thing that always confuses ppl, the fuel pump. Is your carbed engine an 86 or newer block? If so you will have to use the electronic fuel pump, but you can make your own harness that runs from the ignition to the pump, by using the electronic pump you will have to have a fuel pressure regulator, but other than that thats it. As for your question about the throttle linkage, just figure out what tranny your gonna run and pull the throttle bracket off a junked car that is a 79 to 85. As for the battery and solonoid, you can either move them to the location of the other car, or leave them and wire them yourself as well. I have never done a swap on a mustang like this, but I have on several chevy and dodge trucks for friends who mud race and although it looks like a real headache, its reaaly not hard at all.
