I just bought someone elses problem child. It's a 87'5.0 rebult with GT40 iron heads,Explorer intake(match ported) with no EGR ,stk injectors?,1 5/8 shorty's. Don't think it has any cam, 175lbs. comp, 17"/18" vac @ idle. TPS was set over a 1.06volts & timing @14 deg, fuel psi. 35 & 40psi. Plugs are white/grey.Idled @1000 untill I set TPS down .97 V, now it hunts & stalls occasoinally, but the worst thing is when you go to flog it(cold), it BANG/BOOM/POPS from the RH exhaust(side pipes). I've checked my chain/wires/plugs/timing up & down with no help. Code for rich system & EGR. Once you get past the banging it pulls good to 5500RPM. This is still the original speed density car. Almost ready to swap to mass air, going to try a coil & I,ve got a EGR simulator coming to get rid of the EGR code.

I've put a coil on & it'll rev out to 6000rpm no problem now. Installed a EGR simulator, didn't notice any thing but the code 31 gone. Car still bangs & farts on cold light loads out the RH side. Could a O2 sensor or air temp sensor give this problem? Does a 175 psi compesion seem high for a stockish motor? Almost feels like a lean pop, but from what I've read of Speed Density cars there usually rich idle speeds & lean out @ the top. If anyone has any info let me know.

i had somewhat the same problem. when i would start the car in the morning it would pop and bang and backfire. when i would give it any gas it would stall or run really ruff. i replaced the ignition modlue that is on the side of the distributer and it ran fine and havent had a problem with it yet.

I figured a module would either run or not run. I've thrown a new set of 02sensors @ it on a wimm, with no change. Starting to add up every time I throw another peice on. I've finaly ordered a used A9L ECU & mass air conversion kit. Hopefuly my 1st hunch will pay off. I'll be trying that module next. Thanks tntstanger

from my understanding with the mods you have your first hunch is right you need mass air + computer...speed density cant handle those mods....hope this helps.

I've just received my mass air conversion kit(used parts). The meter that came is a stk. 55mm, my throttle body & EGR are 65mm. Is this going to cause any problems before I even start the swap? Has any one tried to open up a stk. meter or just step up to a 70mm or larger meter calibrated for 19lb injectors?
Thanks tntstanger

I am having the same/similar problemon my 89 GT, it has a bbk cold air intake, underdrive pulleys, off-road H pipe and flow master mufflers. When I accelerate hard, it stalls, then the exhause pops and then it will accelerate. So far I have read the possible problems are: Timing, TPS, Ignition Module, bad injectors, air fuel ratio.
If it is timing, then what is the best way to have it adjusted up or down to resolve this issue?
In terms of air/fuel ratio is there a way that this can be tested?
Please assist, becaue this has been ongoing for a while now, and I just brought the car back out after letting it sit for two years.

I basicaly varified TDC on compresion & made sure my chain timing was'nt out with rotor & follwed it up with a compresion test to make sure all was well (175-200). I also grabbed my harmonic ballancer & rocked it back & forth to see how much play in the chain. I then grabed a timing light, pulled SPOUT & set base timing back to 10'(I had mine originaly set to 16')any more it pinged under load. Road tested, jumped out bumped distriber up a touch at little at time untill I ran into thermastat housing with no change & then I did the same thing retarding till it almost would'nt run any more(don't know if this is the way you'll aproach this)Road testing every time I made a small change ,from one extreme to another. As for TPS I used a digital volt meter & some paper clips & back probed the TPS signal wire from idle to WOT. This test is probably not a complete test being you won't be able to see any fall out or spikes with a DVOM. I only know of one way to watch air/fuel mixture(pull a plug & read it) I know theres some fancy gauges for this. I've since done all this & went to mass air & still having same problem. I'll be installing a new(Ford) ignition module tommorow when it comes in(Ford dealer does'nt stock them anymore) to old. Hope this is helpful, Have you tried pulling codes to maybe lead you to a repair procedure. I've also went through KOEO & KOER codes(OTC monitor).

if you have a pep boys, auto zone, or discount auto around you, they usually do have the ignition modules in stock

I installed the new ignition module today & found the heat sink plate to module coroded apart from plastic as well as corrosion on my distributer base. I went with a OEM instead of a jobber because it was only $20 more. Popping & Farting gone, power same as usuall. I guess its time to look @ cams now since its set up with mass air & running good.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. I will start with a tune up and a new ignition module.
