The time has come to start looking for a 99-01 wrecked Explorer with the 5.0L, awd, and 4r70w trans to swap in my Ranger. I will be looking for something that has around the same mileage as the truck, 60K.

The engine will be going in a 2001 lifted ranger. The truck is running 35" tires and 4.56 gears, (stock 4.0L SOHC motor) I want the SBF sound with the 5.0L low-end torque.

I dont plan on having it re-built, rather the tolerances checked, heads pulled, etc. just to make sure everything is in tip top shape before it goes in the truck.

Since the engine is going to be on a stand for a while, what can be done to to get the most amount of low end torque out of the 5.0L? The truck is daily driven and needs to be reliable. I have no plans on rebuilding the engine (347 is out of the question   )

I definitely want to swap out the stock cam for something with good low-end TQ. that has a noticeable idle. Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable cam for my application?

Also, anything else besides a cam?

(I plan on doing small things such as headers, intake, exhaust, Dyno-Tune, etc.)

Thanks!

Anyone?

If not then how do you get your questions to the "Q & A" section of the magazine?

Thanks.

The 5.0L explorer motors are hidden jewels. I recommend the 1996 engine.

The 1996 explorer consists of a GT40 intake, GT40 heads, and a 65mm Throttle body from the factory.

In 1997 Ford switched the explorers to the GT40P heads. If you use these heads a special exhaust manifold is required because of the angle of the spark plug.

By adding just a cam and 1.6 roller rockers to these engines, you will have a beast of a motor.

If you like classics, stick with the Ford Racing E303 cam. It works great with Automatic Transmissions.

To check and see which heads you have count the bars that are cast into the front or back of the heads.

3 bars =GT40
4 bars =GT40P

If you have any questions I'll be back in the office on Monday. My nimber is 770-867-2644. Ask for Billy.

Thanks for the response! I like the sound of that, but i need to stick with a 99-01 motor just because of the PATS system, Fuel system, and overall wiring. It is the closest match to my 2001 ranger.

I plan on using the torque monster headers (if funds allow)

http://torquemonsterheaders.com/

So Explorer 99-01 5.0L, OEM computer, the headers, 1.6 rockers, cam, intake, exhaust, and tune.

What type of numbers should i expect?

Remember i am looking for torque, i think an E303 camshaft may be a bit large for my application.

Thanks
