If you haven't ready Editor Turner's latest blog, check it out here:

The current gas crunch combined with lagging truck sales has made Ford rethink the new 6.2L Boss modular engine. Not really a surprise, and I gotta say, Ford has screwed the pooch on the design of the new Boss engine.

After being able to get a good up close look at the motor during the '07 PRI show, I was shocked by how physically big this motor is. It dwarfs the old 427 SOHC motors! Because of this, to fit this monster in a vehicle, you need an extra large engine bay, requiring a bigger and heavier car. It was a tight fit for the S-197 Mustang I saw the motor in, and those cars have a fairly roomy enigne compartment.

But the bottom line is, why can't Ford come up with an engine more like the GM produced LS V-8s? The motor in Steve Turner's blog is said to displace 6.2L, the same size as the LS3 currently in the C6 Corvette. This motor makes 430 HP, gets excellent fuel economy, and is physically 2/3 the size of the new Boss engine. And the GM motor has plenty of room to grow in displacement.

Why can't Ford design and build and engine like this?! Just imagine if Ford didn't have to dedicate so much engine compartment space to fit the modular motors in, they could design the cars to be a bit smaller and lighter, helping to gain better fuel economy. And I'm sure everyone would like to have a simpler motor design versus the current modular design with its enromous timing chains, front cover, and intake manifold.

It just has to make you wonder what's going on in Ford's engineering department? They come up with a 7.0L engine that's physically bigger than the old 460 big block motor, while GM has a 7.0L engine that's the physical size of a small block.

Sound off 5.0 Nation, what do you think?

Chevy's LSX is taking over the world!!! It's small, it's light, it's powerful, it even gets good gas mileage! Oh noes...

Thank God for Dart! (make mine an 8.2" decked 364" with Edelbrock or TFS on top, please)
