4 lug vs 5 lug regarding brakes

Is there really an advantage to having 5 lugs on a 5.0 compared to 4 lugs? Other than being able to find more wheel designs what is the purpose? With respect to braking power especially, can I get better brakes with a 5 lug. I know in my car, 4 lug, the braking is awful. Is this just because my brakes are really old? I guess what I am trying to say is,"are the same type of breaks available for both lug patterns?" and will changing to all around disk breaks make a big difference?

I upgraded my '89 GT conv using SSBC kit (about $1500) includes new rotors, calipers, axles, larger master cylinder and bracketry. Worth every dime, good stoppage, and the new 17" chrome bullit wheels really pop.

Nice job, Paul. SSBC makes an excellent brake package. Enjoy the new wheels, too.
