hey, was putting a cold air on my 91 gt yesterday, while i had the intake tubes off i decided to clean the throttle body, i used a rag and some spray carb cleaner and cleaned quite a bit of carbon/gunk out of the throttle body, put on my c.a.i. and started it up, it idled at around 1200 rpm and came down to around 1000/900 rpm seems to be too high, i tried cleaning the i.a.c. and turning the mass air, the idle came down when i turned the mass air, untill i tightened the clamps, the idle went right back up. even went up to 2000 rpm once for about 30 seconds? any suggestions would be nice, thanx

If I'm not mistaken the Fox throttle body has an idle adjustment on the bottom side of the throttle body. Adjust that, and see if that cures the problem. Your throttle body might've been that clogged. However, if that doesn't fix the problem, it could be the mass air, and you may even have to buy that little plate that mounts between the IAC valve and the throttle body. That will help you "tune" your idle. It's been so long since I've had to mess with that, I can't even remember what that plate's called, but it has idle airflow screws that help with a high, or hunting idle issue. I've been where you're at, and it can be frustrating. Be patient, and you'll get the problem solved. Good luck.

update, been messing with it, got to looking at the throttle body and there is a hole in the butterfly, looked at another throttle body i had in the garage, and it doesn't have a hole, i switched them just out of curiosity, now when i start it up it will idle up to about 1500 rpm for a maybe 5 seconds, then comes down to 1000-1100rpms for like 20 seconds, drops down to around normal, 700 or so for maybe 3-4 seconds then back upto 1100, and it will keep doing it over and over as long as you let it set there, when you rev it up now and let off the gas it comes back down to around 1500 for a couple seconds then it starts going back and forth again. i have checked the tp sensor and volts are in range, i even unhooked the iac and had no change? it still searched for idle with the iac unplugged, still worken on it thanx 4 the reply

If you can, check to see if anyone has a mass air meter you can try? If you're able to see how the car reacts with a different mass air meter that will help you decide what to do next. Let me know if you can swap the mass air meter.

i don't have another one, trying to get in touch with someone that might have one, and forgot to add, when driving the idle comes up between shifts also, i'm not sure if it matters but i unpluged the mass air when running and it killed the motor, also ran the engine codes, only thing with relevence was code 13 - RPM unable to reach lower test limit ?

I would definitely try a different mass air meter. Which meter do have on the car right now?

it is the stock meter, and it started going stupid when i put the cold air on, so i was thinking maybe it is it, i did turn the maf houseing and the idle came down while it is sitting but it sounds like it has a big cam in it when it idles down, still haveing a lil high idle while driving, between shifts and it takes a while to come down when you come to a stop,

Mine is doing the same thing for since a year now ... a '95 GT 5.0. Cleaned the TB and varoom, idles at 1500 - 2000 - 2500 ~~ Did the cleaner "clean" or "disolve" something that makes the butterfly seat tightly in the bore, ie, prevent air leaks around the butterfly? And more importantly, how can I put it back? Replaced the IAC, nota, nobody carries new TB's anymore, high performance ones are *** there is a internet site out there that describes how to build a restrictor plate to mount between the IAC and the TB to make it idle normally at temperature, but the starts in cold weather are not the quality I've come to expect. Help, need my 5.0 back!

Have you tried adjusting the idle on the throttle body? The adjusting screw is on the bottom side of the throttle boddy on the SN95 cars.

Do an internet search for "throttle body coating" or "ford throttle body coating". Ford, and everyone else coats the innerds of the throttle body with non-stick plastic "Teflon" to make an air tight seal around the butterfly valve. They warning us "not to clean it off" sounds like you didn't get that warning! What I wouldn't give for a $5 bottle of Teflon plastic spray ... well found us a post, if your handy, "http://spdweb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=41 " describes how he "painted" the area around the butterfly valve with a diluted mixture of RTV. Good luck.
