i put a 5.0 ho in a cougar that had a 5.0 in it already but i can not get it to run right. do i need to change the computer in it

The firing order of the two engines are different. If the Cougar's original 5.0 was a non-HO engine, there is your issue. If you have access to the HO computer and wiring harness, that will be your best bet at getting the car to run right.
