I just bought an 85 Mustang Gt that has (supposedly) a 70's 302 in it. It's in the car so I don't have access to the block # someone told me is behind the starter. I'm trying to buy parts for it and I'm not sure what to buy. It has an Edelbrock289 intake, electronic distributor and the oil dipstick is on the passenger side, right behind the alternator.If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.Jerry.

At the bottom of the engine there's an engineering number stamped into the block. The number is along the oil pan rail on the bottom of the engine block itself. Yeah, not the easiest to get to if the engine's in the car, but grab your flashlight, and get up under there. Post the number here and we'll see what you got.

The heads have #'s=3..wcp...78..7e25.

The heads could've been swapped at some point, but get the number off the bottom of the block and let's see what that tells us.

you were right to mention the location of the dipstick...5.0 liters of the 80's had it on the driver side, somewhere between the middle cylinders.
Spray the block with some EasyOff oven cleaner...that may clean the grime off, so you can read the block number better.
While you are there...does the oil pan have two drain holes, or just one?
