starting problems after swap of transmission

hi i am new at this but i have a question i bought a 1991 mustang lx 5.0 ho from my buddy he told me that he put a 1988 thunder bird aod trans in it and used the stock bell housing and or torque converter out of the stock trans i really dont know the difference because i am not a mechanic but i had to finish the swap doing the shift linkage and tv cable and lines when i got it he just had the trans bolted up to the motor my question is now i got it all hooked up it wont start i am using the stock starter! do i need a shim or a different starter i tried to start it and the starter is working but it just sounds like its hitting the flywheel and that"s it . its dose'nt soundlike it whats to turn the flywheel what could be wrong? please help me.
