Hi I'm new here... My son is looking for his first car. He's interested in a '90 or so LX. We were looking to find out what to look for when looking at them. I was looking for something that maybe needs engine or mechanical work and has a solid body. Where do they rust? Anything else to look for? I'm capable in fixing pretty much anything and he's 15 so it's going to be a father son deal

You didn't say if you were getting a 5.0 or 2.3, but personally, I wouldn't suggest a 5.0 for a 15 yr old. My first car was an 88 LX when I was 16. (I paid for it) My dad made me drive it for a year before he let me buy an 87 GT at age 17. Even so, I did a lot of really stupid things in both of those cars. It is only by the grace of God that I'm alive today.
That said, anything less than about an $8000 car is gonna be rust city. The cars are just old. Try to get the lowest mileage, non-wrecked car you can afford. Main areas to look for rust are the floor-boards, front subframe where the k-member bolts up, and rear subframe where the lower control arms bolt up.
Maybe you could mention your location and someone can help you find a car. I'd help you if you were local, but I'm in central Ky. NO ONE lives out here. LOL!
Good Luck!
One more thing, I think it's cool that you're doing a father-son project. I was "helping" my dad work on his '86 5.0 when I was ten years old. That's how my passion for Mustangs started.
