I want to get some opinions about the best lazer/radar detector. I am thinking about getting the Valentine 1, but want some second (and third) opinions.

Aside from the Valentine One, anything from the Escort/Passport line EXCEPT FOR THE SOLO will be the equavilent. Definitely avoid the Whistler, Fuzzbuster, Cobra, BEL, Uniden and any other brand that you've never heard of. Since the 80's I've owned 5 Escorts and they are awesome. I once owned a Whistler, which was a mistake, it barely lasted 4 years and I chunked it out of the window. If price is a object, you can go on e-bay and find some of the older Escort products fairly reasonable. About 7 years ago I bought a old Escort Passport 4500 on ebay for under $50.00 including the shipping and it worked like new.
The Escorts and Valentines give less false signals than the others and the very original Escort was invented by Dr. Valentine.
Now there is a brand called Rocky Mountain Radar that is supposed to be very good but I haven't heard much about them through the years. Some of the Cobra's are facsimiles of the Escort but I wouldn't trust them at all.
