I'm new to 5.0s and have been reseaching the head / cam thing too.  I do know what a cam can do for a bike (got experience with them) and it is a lot, torque and HP.  You need to make some decisions as to what the purpose of the car is... street no strip, some strip, mostly street, mostly strip, or all race.  Is gas mileage a concern?  How high are you going to rev the motor?  What intake are you going to use?  Using stock heads or going with GT40, GT40P ( from late model Explorer), or aluminum heads?  Cam, Intake, and heads can get you large gains and reduce ETs.  There is some info here: http://www.fordracingparts.com/home/home.asp

I think you can go with an b303 and use 1.7 roller rockers, not sure, e303 is a newer design and may work better.  Stronger cams can only take 1.6 rockers and may require a different spring pack, or valves, or both depending on manufacturer.  Some setups require higher valve covers for rocker clearance, still looking for data on that.

For the short term, I'm doing simple stuff in stages.  So far, 73mm C&L MAF and large cone filter, 2.5" Flowmasters, set timing advanced, new plugs and wires.  If you have already done this type stuff and still want more, I understand.  I haven't been back to the track since the MAF but seat of the pants says its quicker and faster.

Sounds like your Dad is helping you out... good man.  I'd keep the mods simple like you already have done.  You should have noticed a healthy power increase already by opening up the intake and exhaust.  To finish out the top end breathing you might think about an intake upper and lower since they are easier to get to than the cam.  The Typhoon or Holley SysteMax are choices available.  A larger throttle body is another way to increase performance but also affect response, make it trickier to modulate.  Once those mods are in, the cam and heads would be last on my list.

One thing to keep in mind is that while a cam can have a vast influence on engine personality and performance, it also affects fuel consumption.   By keeping your foot disciplined, you can keep fuel consumption down.  The heads with largest valves 1.60 exhaust and 2.02 intake offer the most performance potential with a cam, but fuel consumption can be an issue.  I'm thinking of the GT40 Explorer heads or something like that for my personal car.  Head choice does influence cam selection and both head and cam dictate rocker selection.  Research it, save your pennys, look for deals on ebay to keep costs down, do your own work where you feel competent.

All of my discussion is centered around the 5.0 since that is what I own.  If you have the 4.6, you may want to do another route.  Ron

Ok. Here's what ive learned through experience with cams. I dropped an E303 cam in my old mustang. I had an intake and TB and rockers and other stuff like that. It worked pretty good, but ive come to learn that dropping a cam is a good thing as long as you match it up right with the other components. e.g. Heads, Itake, TB, Fuel injectors, etc. If you dont have any of that done, a cam is probably going to hurt you a lil. When you upgrade cams on a stock motor, youre opening up the time your valves stay open resulting in more air and fuel trying to sucked in to the cylinder. If your ports on your intake are stock and not matched up for it, its gonna be like breathing through a straw. My suggestion is to get all the other bolt-ons done first; Intakes, TB, Rockers, Mass air, Injectors, Exaust, Headers, and the most crucial one, HEADS. The best heads on the market right now in my opinion are the Twisted Wedge Heads from Trick Flow. I know a couple guys that use em and lemme tell you...THEY ROCK THE STREETS!! Mustangs love those things. So, i would hold off on the cam thing for a while, a lot of people jump into it (like i did) thinking that no matter what you put on your car as long as its bigger, it will make it faster. This just isnt so. You need to make all the parts work with each other in harmony. Like the clothes you wear, if the shirt is red, and the pants are pink, the stuff just doesn't work right. HAHA. So good luck man. Lemme know what you think.
